It is common experience for the people living in Congo that the day they plan for a sunny picnic and dip in the Congo River, black clouds gather from nowhere and it starts pouring. The intensity of the rains, just like the sun, is also shocking! Lightning splits the sky, followed by cloud bursts. You suddenly feel the huge mass of the sky descending, and wonder if you would see the clouds bursting if you looked up! I’d hardly experienced such thunderous showers anywhere before… the sound is deafening, whether you are indoors or out.
Such showers are followed by a short spell of pleasant weather and (sometimes) days of clogged roads. You feel the sun were better!

Again, a perfect rainy day setup is often marred by a screaming midday sun, hellbent upon extracting the energy from your body. In so much as an hour of continuous exposure to the sun can give a perfect, unwanted tan. Thus, there seems to exist a secret nexus between the sun and the rain; when one starts overpowering, the other quickly slips in! In effect, Congo doesn't conform to the proverb: Morning Shows the Day.

Hi Malo, very interesting and enlightening info about a country whose description I saw last in my Geography books at school. From what I could gather, you must feel like the clock has been turned back by at least a century!
ReplyDeleteThe customs and traditions must be so different! How are marriages conducted? Must be so different from ours. Also, makes me wonder how you keep yourselves entertained. Do you have cinemas and theatre? How about food? Do you get indian vegetables and fruits? Do keep adding more such stuff. This is so interesting!
